Welcome to AnaesthesiaAnaesthesia, intensive Care, emergency medicine, disaster management pain therapy, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and trauma care are integral parts of the department and essential services to modern medical practice. Anaesthetic services are required to develop innovations in surgical, obstetric and medical specialties. Because there are no anaesthesiologists working in the country, postgraduate training is for us the most important part of the department besides service provision. The department was able to secure substantial funds to implement the MMed Anaesthesia programme for medical doctors. The first Malawian doctor started in this programme in April 2009. Two candidates started their training in anaesthesia in 2010. The 5th registrar started in 2011. They will receive 3 years of training in Blantyre and one year in Cape Town at Groote Schuur Hospital and Red Cross Children’s Hospital (the first one already came back to Blantyre.) |
